Historic PresidencyToday, America truly began a new chapter in its history, written by an unlikely candidate who was a little known Illinois state lawmaker only four years ago. It was a historic election; 43 years after Martin Luther King, Jr. marched from Selma to Montgomery in protest of the lack of voting rights. Barack Obama called it a "defining moment." For the first time ever America has sent an African-American man to the White House. President-Elect, Barack Obama, said, "If there is anyone out there who still doubts America as a place where all things are possible...tonight is your answer!" A message heard around the world, Obama's victory ignited celebrations across Kenya where the President-Elect's late father was born and his step grandmother still lives. Israeli Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni, said, "We have a new President, not only of the United States of America, but the President of the United States is the President of the free world." Even locally Obama has been able to elevate himself about partisan politics. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said, "This is a country that's been through a long journey in terms of overcoming wounds and making race not the factor in our lives. That work is not done, but yesterday was obviously an extraordinary step forward." A day after the election, the new President-Elect hit the gym, training to tackle this new era that includes a failing economy and two ongoing international wars. |
