There were some hotly contested races here at home. There was an upset in a State Congressional race. Republican Bill Cassidy won 56% of the vote Tuesday night, defeating incumbent Don Cazayoux for his Congressional seat. It was one of the nail-biting races that took place across our state.
After just five months on the job, Don Cazayoux lost the 6th District Congressional seat to Republican challenger Bill Cassidy.
Congressman Elect Bill Cassidy said, "Healthcare is going to be transformed over the next 4 to 8 years. You want to be a part of that conversation. I’m excited about that. I've talked to people about roads, levees, and locks. I'm very excited to go advocate."
Cazayoux blamed attack ads for contributing to his defeat, "We were able to pull some ads, one dealing with cloning but some ads had a modicum of truth so we weren't able to pull that."
Senator Mary Landrieu was elected to a third term, but by a smaller margin than anticipated. Landrieu won 52% of the vote. She said, "I thank you all for an extraordinary victory. It was hard fought, we fought everyday."
Landrieu's challenger, Republican John Kennedy nabbed 46%. During his concession speech, Kennedy said he wouldn't waste anytime before going back to his day job. "That's what you have to do sometimes when the computer doesn't work, you hit the reset button. After a few hours rest, I will go back to being the best treasurer for the State of Louisiana.
EBR Mayor-President Kip Holden's $1 billion downtown development plan was defeated 51% to 49%. The plan included funding for a new jail, River Center expansion and a theme park. Holden says he'll talk to business and community leaders about how to move forward with the plan.
