Big Rigs Crash, I-10 Shuts Down

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 - 2:02pm

Two big rigs collided on a bridge near La Place—shutting down a ten-mile stretch of eastbound I-10 for most of the day.
State troopers say an 18-wheeler carrying compressed cardboard burst into flames after striking another big rig that was hauling a full load of sulfuric acid.
They say the truck carrying the sulfuric acid made an emergency stop on the bridges shoulder, when the truck full of cardboard sideswiped it.
Authorities tell us the impact caused the cardboard carrying truck to catch fire, but luckily its driver was able to come to a controlled stop and exit the vehicle without any injuries.
Eastbound interstate ten from Gramercy to La Place was closed off until crews cleared the wreckage - New Orleans bound drivers were diverted to Airline highway.
