The Secretary of State’s office is trading in mail ballots that had to be counted by hand for a new scanning system. The new ballots will be scanned into a computer, which saves a picture of the original and tallies the votes.
Sherri Wharton Hadskey, elections director at SOS, says this is just one of many improvements that makes Louisiana’s voting system one of the best in the country.
"As of today, with all of the electronic system that we have, we are going faster with the results than we ever have in the past,” says Wharton Hadskey. “So that's a great, great thing."
The new scanners will be used for all ballots cast through the mail starting this October. That includes absentee, military and the ‘Over 65 Program’, which allows seniors to have ballots delivered to their door.
