New hurricane model underway at LSU
While Hurricane Bill is churning in the Atlantic, one professor and his research team are finding a way to warn people earlier than ever.
They're using a new model to help track storms. It combines hurricane waves and storm surges to determine how a weather event could affect coastal areas.
The innovation not only brings in significant amounts of grant money and prestige for the university, researchers hope in the future it will also help Louisiana to be better-prepared if a large hurricane comes our way again.
Professor Q. Jim Chen hopes his research will also help engineers build better structures along the coast to hold up to hurricane force winds.
