A 17-year-old is in jail accused of raping a 5-year-old child. We spoke with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office and the family of the teen accused of the crime. They both reflected on the 5-year-old that sits at the middle of this difficult case.
It’s a crime that’s hard to stomach. Jason Ard with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 5-year-old child was raped, “Right now there’s one incident. Right now we don’t know if there’s other incidents, but we are investigating that.”
They’ve arrested 17-year-old Jonathan Foy, who is in jail on $500,000 bond. But Foy’s family says he didn’t do it. Dawn Cavs, Foy’s aunt, says, “There’s witnesses to prove he’s never alone. The night this was supposed to have happened, there’s witnesses to tell you this boy didn’t know what he was accused of.” At the same time they want justice for the 5-year-old victim, a child whom they all know.
It is a tough case and a tough road ahead for the victim, the accused, and their families. A note on this case, prior to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, aggravated child rape could carry a penalty of death if convicted. Now the longest possible sentence is around 40 years.
