Louisiana Office of Tourism chooses education as the theme for the 2010 National Tourism Week. BATON ROUGE, LA - National Tourism Week is May 8-16 and the Louisiana Office of Tourism is focusing on education through state Welcome Centers and awarding a scholarship. The Louisiana Office of Tourism has partnered with Miles Media to offer a one-year tuition scholarship to the Southeast Tourism Society’s (STS) Marketing College. The scholarship will be awarded to someone currently employed in Louisiana's tourism industry. The STS’s Marketing College is a three-year educational program for members of the tourism industry in the Southeast United States. From July 25-30, 2010, courses are held at the campus of North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega, GA. Individuals wishing to compete for the scholarship should contact the Louisiana Office of Tourism for an application at (225) 342-8100 or (225) 219-9858. The deadline for applications is Thursday, May 13, 2010. The selectee will be notified on Saturday, May 15. "We are very excited to provide individuals in the Louisiana tourism industry with an opportunity for professional growth, exchange of ideas and networking with their peers in the Louisiana and Southeast tourism communities,” said Jay Salyers, Vice President of Publishing for Miles Media." Miles Media is also offering the STS scholarship program in the states of Florida, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Supporting the theme of education throughout the week, Louisiana Welcome Centers will be educating visitors and Louisiana residents about different elements of tourism. A complete list of these events and attractions follows. The Louisiana tourism industry directly employs 124,000 and creates an additional 60,000 jobs in secondary employment. One out of every 12 people in Louisiana is employed as a result of the tourism industry.
