Two men upset with the speed van in Livingston Parish turn to the internet to vent their frustrations. Those men launched a new push to get the speed van moved out of Livingston. Our David D’Aquin is tracking this story as it moves from the streets to the internet.
Two Livingston Parish residents have set up a website called BanTheVan.com. they say even though the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office says it’s motivation is safety, they’re crossing the line.
The Sheriff’s Office in Livingston Parish says the speed van is a tool that’ll help them make the streets safer. But the two men running BanTheVan.com say they’re starting a petition to keep the van parked.
Dustin Dier and a friend started up the website. They have a variety of problems with the speed van in Livingston Parish, but their biggest problem is the flash on the van. Watch the video they got along I-12 at night. They say they’ve received dozens of e-mails from concerned citizens who are also worried about the flash. Livingston Deputies say the van makes the streets safer by encouraging drivers to slow down.
Still, the Sheriff’s Office says the van is working. Deputies say people are slowing down, but folks opposing the van say they think the van is simply a moneymaker for Livingston Parish. Dustin Dier says, “If this is to reduce speeders on the interstate and it’s going to bring in money, let’s just call it that. Let’s not just put it under the guise of safety.”
BanTheVan.com organizers say they’re hoping they’ll be able to get the Livingston Parish government to reconsider using the van at all.
The Ban the Van website is relatively new but already they’ve had more than 600 visitors. The Sheriff’s Office says they’re in compliance with the law and say the van is helping not hurting Livingston Parish.
