Hispanics Targeted? Myrtle Place Apartments

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - 6:12pm

An update on the two shootings in two days at the Myrtle Place apartment complex that sent two Hispanic men to the hospital. Authorities haven’t officially established a connection, but say there is a strong possibility they were related.

There is a large Hispanic population living in the apartment complex. The owner told us that many are, in fact, migrant workers. Authorities say often time people of this lifestyle fall victim to these crimes because robbers know they carry large amounts of cash. Sgt. Don Kelly explains, “Often they don’t use traditional banking methods and they’re paid off the books.”

Police say it’s difficult following up on these types of crimes. The workers move around so much, looking for jobs. That makes them hard to track down. Witnesses describe the suspects as a trio of black males in their late teens to early twenties. If you have any information on the shootings, contact Baton Rouge Police.
