LA to drug test welfare recipients?
Louisiana is one step closer to becoming the only state that would require random drug tests for its welfare recipients. House Bill 617 barely made it past a State Senate committee. The proposal would require 20% of people who get welfare to be subject to random drug testing. If someone tested positive they would have to enter treatment or lose their cash aid. "It's only fair that if you are going to be receiving those benefits that you are using that money to support your family and not some drug habit" says Rep. John LaBruzzo. Proponents of the bill hope the random drug tests will help pregnant women and single mothers stay off drugs. Its opponents claim the bill targets poor people and minorities
