Multiple Road Closures in Ascension Parish

Because of Heavy Rainfall

GONZALES – Heavy rains that began Monday morning prompted numerous road closures across Ascension Parish. The parish is under a flash flood watch through Tuesday afternoon as more rain is forecast.

Parish work crews were working to mitigate flooding on roadways as well as to try to prepare for further rainfall. As of 9 a.m., 2-4 inches of rain had fallen parish wide, with localized rain reported up to 4½ inches.

As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, the following roads/intersections were closed because of standing water:

· South Hodgeson at Clouatre, Gonzales
· LA 930 at Henry, Prairieville
· Bayou Narcisse between Roddy and LA 431, Gonzales
· Palmetto Lane (Country Ridge Subdivision), Prairieville
· Tiggy Duplessis at LA 621, Duplessis
· Silver Oak Drive, Gonzales
· Roy Rogers at James, Prairieville
· LA 308, Donaldsonville
· Evangeline Ave., Donaldsonville
· Melancon, Sorrento
· Pelican Crossing, Darrow
· New Sharper Road off LA 73
· New Orleans Drive (River Ridge Subdivision off LA 22)
· Ruby at Brittany, Sorrento
· Louis White at McDaniels, Dutchtown
· Beau Douglas at Pelican Point, Darrow
· Split Log Road, St. Amant

The three major river stages in the parish remained below flood stage Tuesday morning:

· Bayou Manchac at Amite: 5 feet at 7 a.m., flood stage is 9 feet
· Bayou Manchac at Little Prairie: 6.28 feet at 6:45 a.m., flood stage is 10 feet
· Amite River at Port Vincent: 3.68 feet at 6:15 a.m., flood stage is 8 feet

Sand for sand bags are available at DPW headquarters on Churchpoint Road in Gonzales and at the DPW office in Donaldsonville. The parish’s pumping stations in Sorrento and at McElroy (Marvin Braud) are both running at full capacity.

The National Weather Service in New Orleans issued a flash flood watch Tuesday morning for portions of southeast Louisiana, including Ascension. The advisory states that additional heavy rainfall of 1-2 inches is expected with localized heavier amounts of 3-4 inches possible.
