No Indictment for Ascension Mayor

Monday, March 16, 2009 - 5:56pm

There is no indictment tonight for the Ascension Parish Mayor accused of hitting and killing a biker from Prairieville with her car.

After hours of testimony, the Grand Jury decided to drop the charges against Brenda Melancon. Melancon, the Mayor of Sorrento, is accused of pulling her car out of the Ascension Civic Center and hitting a motorcycle driven by Jim Pickholtz. Pickholtz was killed and his wife, Amy, was injured. Amy Pickholtz testified before the jury calling for an indictment. “It’s devastating, we are all forever changed. We’re not that blended family anymore that we were.”

Six other witnesses were called, including Warren Broussard of the Motorcycle Safety Campaign. “We had some unsafe acts. It happened to this particular person.” Noticeable absent was Brenda Melancon, the accused, but her presence was not mandatory at today’s hearing.

The widow, Amy Pickholtz, said she plans on pushing for stricter laws to protect motorcycle riders.
