Plane Crash Investigation in Slaughter

A fatal plane crash claims the life of its experienced pilot this morning in Slaughter. Authorities say the small plane took off from the Slaughter Airfield but a mechanical problem forced the plane to turn around just before the crash.

They say 56-year-old Walter Books had just bought the Titan Tornado II and was headed to Jonesville. After turning around, authorities say he tried to land the plane on the runway but crashed. First responders pulled Books from the plane and rushed him to a hospital where he later died.

Capt. Kelly Davis with Slaughter Fire Department says, “They have a variety of planes stored here. People put them in storage and fly them pretty regularly. This is the first time we’ve been called out for a plane crash at the airfield.”

Officials believe the pilot did not send out a distress call because the plane did not have a radio. The FAA is currently investigating the crash site.
