Red Stick Storm Damage

Thursday, March 26, 2009 - 5:59pm

Our Kianga Kelley was out braving the elements today. There was certainly enough damage to have folks cleaning up all morning.

Last night the Red Stick was rocked with strong winds, heavy rain, and multiple lightning strikes. The roof of a cabinet business was ripped off on Airline Highway. It sent debris all across neighboring parking lots. Power outages along Essen Lane and other major streets had several traffic lights down, making the morning commute difficult.

Nine East Baton Rouge schools were without power today. Those students were transported to neighboring schools. Cedarcrest Elementary Principal Josephine Batiste says, “We were told we were going to come to Sherwood Middle, so we packed up the food, packed up some books, we packed some movies, and we packed children, and we moved over here.”

Look at what happened to some of Billy Heroman’s vans. The sign snapped in two before crushing the top of the vehicles. The store was able to continue with deliveries.

All but one EBR school was able to regain power today. Officials hope Wedgewood Elementary will have power in time for class tomorrow.
