River West Medical Center Update

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 - 5:56pm

We continue to track the battle to keep River West Medical Center in Iberville Parish open after a lack of funds threatens to shut the hospital down.

The Department of Health and Hospitals had an emergency meeting with the CEO of River West as well as state representatives. They discussed how to keep the financially strapped hospital open.

Last week, 40 paychecks of the hospital’s 200 employees bounced. Because of that, the evening shift didn’t show up for duty, so the hospital was forced to close their ICU and surgical units for one down.

CEO Bryan Bogle told NBC33 News the meeting was to talk about the hospital’s recovery plan, which does not include additional state funds, but rather funds from Zurich Insurance to help cover payroll costs. DHH helped cover payroll costs last time and sent us this comment: “While responsibility for continuing business operations of a private hospital does not lie with DHH, the Department understands its continued operation is important to the care of the region.”

So while the financial fate of River West is temporarily sustainable, the longevity of the hospital most definitely remains up in the air. We’ll continue to track this story.
