There was a shocking decision Friday, as the Southern University Board of Supervisors ousted SU’s System President.
Lately, System President Dr. Ralph Slaughter has been catching heat from all angles, from allegations of abusing his power to a controversial lawsuit against the board two years ago. It was an 11 to 5 vote during today’s board meeting to not renew or extend Dr. Slaughter’s two year contract.
Student Government President Jamal Taylor says he opposed the board’s decisions claiming it didn’t make any sense. “Someone wise once told me there’s no place for politics in higher education and I feel we just play political games sometimes. I’m concerned because we had a President who was interested in the general interested of students and they were terminated today.”
But Tony Clayton, the Board Chairman, stands by the decision claiming “it’s time for a change.” Clayton and other board members say slaughter was great, but the University needs someone to get them through the new budget cuts.
The board will meet again next month to determine whether or not to place Slaughter on administrative leave until his contract expires on June 30th.
