BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Holiday shopping is up once again this year, and local businesses say they're benefitting from it.
According to the National Federation of Independent Business, spending on Small Business Saturday reached $5.5 billion nationally. That's slightly higher than projected.
Stores around Baton Rouge say they've had a good season already, in part because shoppers are determined to keep their money at home.
"A lot have come because they know that I support local business and most of my stuff's local,” Erica Winkler, owner of Abbey Lane, said. “They come here instead of going to the mall or other places like that."
Nationwide, Christmas shopping is expected to rise more than 5-percent compared to last year, passing $580 billion.
