McNeese State's softball team got back into the win column here Tuesday with a 6-1 win over Southern to improve to 13-16 overall. The win over the Jaguars is the second for McNeese in less than a week. McNeese defeated Southern 5-2 last Thursday in Lake Charles.
Molly Guidry led a Cowgirl 11 hit game with a three for four plate appearance and three RBI's. Guidry also scored a run in the fifth inning. Holly Long also had a good game at the plate with two hits in three appearances and two RBI's. Long also scored a run in the fifth inning.
McNeese took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Guidry that scored Lindsey Langner who started the game off with a walk. Langner put herself in scoring position by stealing second then advanced to third on a ground out by Liz Morvant.
Guidry collected her second RBI of the game in the third inning to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead. Claire Terracina scored from third after she singled and advanced to third on a single by Langner.
After Southern scored their only run of the game in the fourth on a solo homerun by Victoria Stewart to cut the Cowgirl lead to 2-1, McNeese added three runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 5-1. McNeese scored its three runs on three hits coming from a two RBI single by Long and a RBI by Terracina. Dani Price and Rachel King also picked up singles in the inning.
The Cowgirls added an insurance run in the sixth on Guidry's third RBI of the game that sent Liz Morvant home after she singled. Bethany Stefinsky improved to 9-10 with the one hit victory in four innings of work. Stefinsky struck out six of the 14 batters she faced.
