Down 1-0 in the seventh inning, Juliana Santos belted a one-out triple to spark the LSU softball team to a 2-1 comeback victory over Nicholls Wednesday at the Colonel Softball Complex.
Casey Faile drew a walk before Santos knocked the 1-2 offering from Audrey Wood into the right centerfield gap to score pinch runner Tiffany Shaw.
“She [Wood] was pitching me inside at the beginning of the at-bat, but Coach DeFeo told me before I went up there that her go to pitch was the curve ball away,” Santos said. “We struggled last weekend. It was good for our spirit that we were able to come back and pull this one out on the road.”
Jessica Mouse reached on a Kayla Watterson fielding error to score Santos for the game-winning run, while Brittany Mack tossed three innings of one-hit relief with six strikeouts to improve to 10-1.
“The park is packed every time we go on the road in the state,” head coach Yvette Girouard said. “Our young team found another way to win. We can’t roll of the bus and beat people. We have to understand that we’re going to get their best shot.”
The Tigers (23-9-1) have won 17 straight against Nicholls (26-13) and improved to 70-4 against in-state rivals under Girouard.
Faile earned a no-decision firing four innings of one-hit ball. The Colonels scored an unearned run capped by a Watterson sacrifice fly.
“Casey wasn’t completely sharp but pitched well enough to win,” Girouard said. “Brittany came in and did a good job of shutting them down in relief.”
LSU heads to Arkansas for a weekend series. Friday’s doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. with Saturday’s single-game starts at 12 p.m.
