A local oceanologist is attracting worldwide attention for the video he captured of a rare underwater creature.

Mark Benfield filmed a fifty-foot-long silver oarfish in the Gulf of Mexico.

It's believed to be the first-ever video of the serpent-like fish in its natural habitat which is 1500 feet under water.

Until now, the creature has only been spotted near the surface usually dying or dead washed up on shore.

Benfield has spent the last three years studying the Gulf's deep sea activity. Now, he's writing an oarfish article for a scientific journal.
