McNeese State's softball team improved to 13-15 on the year with a 5-2 victory over Southern in Lake Charles Thursday afternoon.
Liz Morvant led the Cowgirls with a two for three plate appearance and two stolen bases. Claire Terracina led the Cowgirls with two RBI's and scored two runs and was credited with one stolen base. The Cowgirls used all four pitchers in the game and Bethany Stefinsky, this weeks Southland and Lousiana Pitcher of the Week was the winner after 4 2/3 scoreless innings and 11 strikeouts. The victory is Stefinsky's eighth this season. Also appearing in the circle was Michelle LaVoie (1.0 inning), Katie Shumaker (1.0 inning) and Tiffany Denham (0.1) inning.
McNeese scored two runs in the first inning, the first coming from the first of three Southern errors that scored Lindsey Langner. Terracina scored the second run off a RBI ground out by Molly Guidry.
The Cowgirls added another run in the third on an error that scored Guidry who reached on a single. Two more runs in the fourth gave the Cowgirls a 4-0 lead. Morvant singled, stole second and scored on a Terracina's second RBI of the game. Terracina scored the Cowgirls' fourth run of the game on a single by Dani Price. Southern scored both their runs in the seventh on two hits to avoid the shutout.
