New Mexico women's basketball (23-10) advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) Wednesday with a whooping 72-44 victory over Southern (16-14) inside The Pit.
Lobo Amy Beggin led all scorers with 15 points and became the sixth player in UNM history to reach 1,000 points as a junior. Every Lobo scored in the first round blowout and set the stage for a rematch with Nebraska Wednesday, March 25. New Mexico will host the Cornhuskers next Wednesday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M.
Beggin highlighted the win after reaching the career mark and only played 31 minutes. Beggin as 9-for-9 from the free throw line and had five assists. Beggin is the 16th player to reach the 1,000 point plateau at New Mexico. She currently has 1,010 points for her career.
UNM had four players score in double figures and got 28 points from the bench. Senior Amanda Adamson chipped in 15 while fellow senior Angela Hartill scored 11. Junior Georonika Jackson came off the bench to score 10 and hit two three-pointers. Jackson reached double figures for the third time this season.
New Mexico dominated from the very beginning and led 11-2 after the first six minutes. The Lobos continued to stretch the lead for the remainder of the half and led by as many as 23 with 1:32 left in the opening period. New Mexico took a 38-15 advantage into the locker room.
