Slow Start Dooms Alabama A&M Women in Loss to Southern
The Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs concluded their two game road swing with a 55-37 loss to Southern in Baton Rouge on Monday.
A&M struggled on the offensive end of the ball as the Bulldogs were only able to connect on 12-of-53 (22.6 percent) hoops for the game. Alabama A&M drops to 7-6 in SWAC play and 9-14 overall. Southern improves its record to 9-5 in the conference and 12-10 overall.
A&M had cold hands in the first period as they trailed 32-13 at the half. The Lady Jaguars pushed the spread to 17, 38-21 midway through the second period. The Lady Bulldogs used a 13-6 run to trim the margin and cut to 45-35, capped by a Whiquitta Tobar layup with 3:33 remaining in regulation. A&M would get no closer, however.
Ashleonte Samuel led the Lady Bulldogs with nine points. Tobar finished with eight points, including a 6-for-6 mark at the charity stripe. Chelsea Marshall pulled down seven off the glass.
Southern was led by Jamie Floyd's 15 points and six boards. Deidra Jackson tallied 11 points and eight rebounds. Kimberly Griffin recorded a game-best 13 boards. Ashley Augerson grabbed 10 boards and chipped in with seven points.
