Southeastern Doubles Up Southern, 4-2
Southeastern Louisiana senior Heather Sherrill became the school’s new career hits leader and sophomore Kelly Lyman hit a two-run home run to key the Lady Lions’ 4-2 victory over Southern in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at Lady Jaguar Field.
The victory was the seventh in the last nine games for the steadily-improving Lady Lions (17-20). Southern fell to 15-19 overall with the loss.
For the second straight game, Sherrill, who was named the LSWA Hitter of the Week on Wednesday, was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Already the school’s career leader in doubles, total bases, extra-base hits and RBI, the Alexandria native’s performance on Wednesday gives her 187 hits in her career, surpassing the previous school record of 186 held by former Lady Lion Heather Dye.
In the circle, Southeastern freshman Katelyn Thomason (5-6) put together a strong complete-game effort, surrendering only one earned run. The Spring, Texas native held Southern to three hits, striking out four in the process.
“This was a nice win for us,” Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois commented. “We were encouraged to see Kelly come up with a big home run to key the win. We’re starting to see different people throughout our lineup produce, which we see as sign of our continued improvement. We’re also pleased to see Katelyn continue our streak of productive performances in the circle.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Tamra Ladnier roped a one-out double to left centerfield off Southern starter Caroline Myers (6-8). Sherrill followed with a single to plate Ladnier and give Southeastern the early advantage.
Southern came back to tie the score in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Kesha Tauriac doubled off the left field fence. Kasha Tauriac followed with a grounder to short, but Lady Lion sophomore Katie Duhe’s throw sailed wide, allowing the tying run to come in to score.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Lady Lions broke the tie in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Sherrill singled to right. Next up was freshman Meghan Gomez, who roped a doubled to left centerfield, allowing Sherrill to score from first and put the Lady Lions up, 2-1.
Southeastern padded its lead in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Amber Freeman started a two-out rally with a single into left field. Lyman then cleared the bases with a shot over the left field fence. The first home run of the season for the Kingwood, Texas product put Southeastern up, 4-1.
Southern cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out rally of its own. Lauren Dodd lined a two-out triple down the left field line and scored on a bloop RBI single into shallow left by Kesha Tauriac. Senior catcher Allyson McCubbins ended the inning for the Lady Lions, throwing out Tauriac trying to steal second. Thomason set the Lady Jaguars down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
