St. James Seeks Juvenile Tax Renewal
CONVENT, La. (AP) - St. James Parish government officials are
asking voters Saturday to renew a parish-wide 1-mill property tax to help pay for an 80-bed juvenile detention facility near Donaldsonville.
If renewed, the 1-mill property tax would generate $400,000 annually over the 20-year life of the tax, which is subject to Louisiana's homestead exemption.
Parish officials said the tax expires this year. The seven-member Parish Council agreed Monday to put the tax on the ballot.
Parish President Dale Hymel Jr. said the center employs about 60
people locally and meets a need for juvenile detention.
