Juniors Ryan Schimpf and Blake Dean launched back-to-back home runs to spearhead a five-run third inning, and the LSU pitching staff hurled five straight scoreless frames after the fourth to lead the sixth-ranked Tigers past Southeastern Louisiana, 6-5, Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.
LSU improved to 29-12 with its second win over SLU this season. The Lions dropped to 23-16 despite collecting 16 hits on the evening.
Schimpf’s dinger was his 11th of the season, while Dean extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his seventh homer on the year. Right fielder Jared Mitchell finished 2-for-3 with a RBI single, a walk and a stolen base.
LSU right-hander Ben Alsup (1-0) recorded his first win of the season. The sophomore pitched six innings, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs and striking out four. SLU’s Shawn Herring (2-4) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) in only three innings.
