A 19-year-old was killed last night after he accidentally detonated a homemade explosive with his friend. Unofficial sources say the young men were not intend to do harm, rather, they were attempting to fire a signal cannon commonly used during holiday celebrations.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident happened at a home in Pearl River at roughly 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9. We’re told a neighbor called 911 after hearing loud noises that sounded like an explosion. When deputies arrived on scene they found one man dead on the ground and an injured teen inside the home on the property.

The injured 17-year-old was transported to a local hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

A bomb squad was called in to search the area and determine whether the device was still a threat. The scene was cleared, however, investigators are still working to determine the exact composition of the explosive materials.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s office and the ATF.
