BATON ROUGE (FOX44) - Saturday fifth graders at Kenilworth Charter School had a competition to see who could add up.

It was a Math contest that had over 200 students from 50 schools in East Baton Rouge parish.

Youngsters demonstrated their knowledge of algebraic reasoning, geometry, number patterns, measurements, data analysis and probability.

Sounds like a lot, but when the prizes were ipods, laptops, and bikes, the kids got to work.

Eric Giles is a Math teacher at Kenilworth, and he said the prizes were great, but the kids just wanted to prove themselves.

"They're excited to showcase this. They work hard in the classroom every single day and now they get to show what they know; Not just among their classmates and their school, but the best of the best. And that just makes them want to try harder. They're excited to see, am I really one of the top math students in the Baton Rouge area?"
