Albuquerque police officer Hector Marquez, Jr. is getting some unexpected attention after a simple act of kindness went viral.

Marquez was responding to a domestic dispute call on September 11, when he arrived to find a 63-year-old woman caring for her grandchildren. Marquez was able to resolve the dispute, but soon discovered that the grandmother was caring for the young children on a fixed income and food stamps. The family had not eaten since the previous day, because they were waiting for food stamp money to come in.

Marquez went to a local grocery store and bought the family groceries out of his own pocket. Officer Marquez did not want to report his generosity, but one of his squad mates wanted to ensure that Marquez was commended for his selfless act.

Officer Marquez has been given an Award of Commendation from the Albuquerque Police Department for his act of kindness.
