AROUND THE WORLD (FOX44) – Italy, Pope Benedict XVI welcomes thousands at a prayer service at the coliseum for Good Friday. Then he led ‘the way of the cross’ procession around the ancient Roman structure.

Australia – Hundreds of people gathered in Sydney to watch a modern take on recalling the last hours leading to the crucifixion of Jesus. An actor bloodied and dressed in rags, carried a large wooden cross through the streets.

The Philippines – A tradition is taken to the extreme as participants whip themselves as they walk. And they actually get nailed to a cross at the end of the ceremony.

Israel – In Jerusalem, hundreds of Christian pilgrims celebrated Good Friday with a procession along the same route they believe Christ took. Christian tradition says Jesus was crucified and buried before his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Also in Israel, people of the Jewish faith are preparing for the week long Passover celebration. Passover begins at sundown tonight and marks the biblical story of the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt.
