Bankers and Baton Rouge attorneys joined forces to teach people how to stay out of the red, by managing their green. From first timers, to seasoned bankers, all were welcomed to a free finance seminar sponsored by the Baton Rouge Bar Foundation.

This event was part of their Pro Bono project as a means of educating people on how to be smart with their money. Their goal, according to presenter and attorney Gary McKenzie, is to “take folks who don’t have a lot of experience, or who are having problems handling their money, and try to teach them some basic skills and pitfalls.” He warned attendees about check cashing services and pay day loans.

Emergency savings and debt management were a couple of the main points, but Bernice S. Carter says she gained a little bit more. Carter came from a family of 12 where money was tight. “I want to be able to maintain and stick to a budget that I would establish and set for myself,” said Carter. “If I can get that ‘down pat,’ then I’m okay!”
