Baton Rouge sculptor to enter international arts contest

A local man will represent Baton Rouge in an internationally-acclaimed art festival.

Cetin Atec was selected to bring his sculptures to the international Sculpture Objects & Functional Arts competition in Chicago next week.

He has been working with metal for 15 years, and also teaches children through the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.

He's originally from Turkey, and much of his work is about hope and new opportunities.

He says he wants his pieces to take us away from all the stressful aspects of our daily lives.

"I'm trying to catch a warm sense in the steel, so my themes can be cheerful and the people (viewing the pieces) can catch it," said Atec.

He goes on to say he's nervous about competing on such a big stage, but he's most nervous about having to drive his sculptures to the SOFA competition in Chicago by himself.
