Belle Chase, La — The DOTD has announced that the Belle Chasse Bridge will be closed starting Saturday, February 23, through Sunday, March 3, 2013. During this time the Belle Chase Tunnel will have two-way traffic.
On Saturday, February 23rd, two-way traffic will be placed on the bridge while crews ready the tunnel for two-way traffic. Once tunnel work is complete, or approximately Saturday afternoon, two-way traffic will be placed in the tunnel through the duration of the closure period. During this time, truck traffic will be strictly prohibited from using the tunnel. The tunnel will be monitored by law enforcement 24 hours a day.
The Belle Chase Bridge will be closed for repairs including the replacement of wire rope (bridge lifting cables) and refurbishing the gear boxes on the bridge. The DOTD has coordinated this closure with the on-going work to the Lapalco Bridge which is being done by Jefferson Parish since the bridge is located on the alternate route for navigation (Harvey Canal).
“We are asking residents to be extra cautious while traveling through the tunnel. We know this will inconvenience our residents but know this is necessary to fix problems that will allow the bridge to operate more efficiently in the future,” said President Billy Nungesser.
