Coast Guard held commemoration ceremony for men who died aboard White Alder
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — A Coast Guard commemoration ceremony was held downtown today for the 17 men who died aboard the White Alder.
The ship sank 44 years ago today after colliding with a Taiwanese steam ship in the Mississippi River near White Castle. Only three crewmembers on the ship survived the crash. Former Coast Guard officers attended the ceremony to honor those who lost their lives.
"I just felt it was important to come here and pay my respects to our shipmates that were lost on the White Alder today being the anniversary of the sinking, so that they won't be forgotten," Charlie Bartell, said.
A memory wall was dedicated in 2009 near the USS Kidd to honor the men aboard the White Alder that day.
