Colorado girl mistaken for burglar-shot and killed
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KRDO) — It was a tragic case of mistaken identity.
A man shot and killed his 14-year-old stepdaughter as she crawled into a basement window in the middle of the night.
Police say he thought she was a burglar.
Just before 6am, Colorado Springs Police get a call about a burglary in progress.
Police say it was a 14-year-old girl.
"I heard three bangs. They weren't all right together. It was like bang, bang, bang," neighbor Jani Harvey said.
911 OPERATOR: "Homeowner is saying that they shot at the suspect, unknown where the suspect went."
...But a little over a minute later: tragedy.
911 OPERATOR: "May have been their daughter coming through the window."
Police Say It Was A 14-Year-Old Girl.
911 OPERATOR: "It looks like the daughter was shot in the stomach and the chest, and she is now in the basement."
Shots shattering a family, fired by the teen's stepfather -- bullets that could have even taken more.
"He goes, 'Mom! They removed bullets from our wall,’” said neighbor Mary Zesiewicz
Zesiewicz Was Asleep Behind That Wall.
"It's a very, very scary feeling," she said.
Over the initial feeling of shock: now, just sadness.
"My heart is grieving for a 14 year-old,” said Zesiewicz.
The only thing stolen, this morning: A girl’s lives on Christmas break from her freshman year of high school.
