Thursday, a community remembered and celebrated the life of a hero. Stanford Wilson died in a house fire last Friday.

"He is a good guy,” said Wilson’s sister, Lois. “He had a great heart."

Lois Wilson looks around the room of the church with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face.

"It’s always nice to know that people love your loved one,” said Wilson. “It’s nice to see these people who loved the loved one it's wonderful."

Her brother, Stanford Wilson, was a hero to many after trying to save an officer from a gunman back in 2004 and he is a man no one will forget.

"He was important to the community because he was a people person,” said Wilson’s cousin, Freddrick Millican. “He loved his friends and he loved everyone around him.”

But his death was abrupt and caught many people off guard. It is also something that could have possibly been prevented.

"Everyone has the mentality that it will never happen to me," said Baton Rouge Fire Department’s Curt Monte.

Even Wilson says she could never imagine a fire would take the life of a loved one.

“That’s a scary thing and I think we don’t think about things until something like this happens then you really have to step back and put into perspective," noted Lois Wilson.

Now as family, they will remember Wilson but will also remember the next time they light the stove or even burn a candle.

"These things are real and fire kills as we see now," said Millican.

As Curt Monte explains, being aware is crucial.

"Unfortunately it does if you take small steps and use precaution fires can be prevented," noted Monte.

And now Wilson will walk away with a memory of her brother and a reminder that life can take unexpected turns.

"You put it into perspective, what am I doing how I can avoid that happening in my situation."

The cause of the fire that killed Stanford Wilson is still being investigated.
