Metro Council approved the Costco proposal 10-1. That paves the way for the mega store to move into Baton Rouge.

The council members talked about the fact that the store will bring 250 jobs to the junction of I-12 and Airline. Those jobs have full benefits, and pay an average of $23 an hour.

The city will pay nearly $8 million in sales tax incentives to help Costco pay for the property improvements it, and the neighborhood, need.

"If you're a business, and you don't ask for this, shame on you," Mayor Pro-Tem Chandler Loupe noted.

But many people spoke against the deal, saying it could kill small businesses and set a horrible precedent for other businesses.

"Retail does not grow the economy," Gordon Mese, a local retailer, said.

Costco will pay for and manage all the construction needed for it to open up.

The city's tax break will run for about 4 years, and after that, the deal ends and it will be business as usual for Costco.
