A 19-year-year old man has confessed to setting six fires in New Roads, officials confirmed.

Nicholas Powell was arrested by deputies with the Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office in connection to the fires. They say he is cooperating with investigators.

The fires were set between the late evening on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and continued until early in the morning the following day.

“We've been very fortunate that no one has been killed and no one has been injured," Sheriff Bud Torres said.

Powell is currently being held on one count of Aggravated Arson and Simple Arson (5 counts).

Officials say they do not anticipate any additional arrests in this case.
