ASCENSION PARISH, LA — Multiple arrests were made and nearly 20 pounds of marijuana was intercepted via the U.S. Mail after a three-day investigation in Ascension Parish,
On October 22, the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Detectives and U.S. Postal Inspectors began the investigation and were able to determine that the recipient of the package containing marijuana was a female named Miriam Lazo Garcia.
On October 24, while under surveillance, Garcia arrived at a local Post Office and took possession of the package containing the marijuana. Narcotics detectives immediately placed her under arrest. As a result of Garcia’s arrest it was discovered that she was to deliver the package to two other subjects, Enrique Romo Bustos and Claudio Alejo Equia, and receive $500 for the delivery.
Narcotics detectives then went to Bustos and Equia’s address, and the two were also taken into custody. Detectives also searched the residence of Garcia, which produced the seizure of an additional pound of marijuana, cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and two weapons.
As a result of searching Garcia’s home and recovering the drugs and weapons detectives have obtained an outstanding arrest warrant on Garcia’s boyfriend, Renee Martinez, who resides in the home with her.
Immigration authorities have placed a hold on Bustos and Equia who are in the United States illegally.
Miriam Lazo Garcia, 43, of Gonzales, was arrested and charged with two counts Possession With Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Possession of Cocaine, Illegal Carrying of Weapons, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Bond has been set at $83,342.50.
Enrique Romo Bustos, 33, of Prairieville, was arrested and charged with Possession With Intent to Distribute Schedule I (Marijuana) and Immigration Fugitive. Bond has been set at $150,000.
Claudia Alejo Eguia, 28, of Metehuala, San Louis Potosi, Mexico, was arrested and charged with Conspiracy to Possession With Intent to Distribute Schedule I CDS (marijuana) and Immigration Fugitive. Bond has been set at $150,000.
Renee Martinez, 31, of Gonzales, is wanted on charges of Possession With Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Possession of cocaine, Illegal Carrying of Weapons, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Martinez is also in the United States illegally and when arrested Immigration authorities will also place a hold on him.
