BAKER, LA (FOX44) — UPDATE: Baker police have arrested Kenard Gaines, 17, of Baker, for the murder of Kortlon Johnson, 19, of Baton Rouge.
ORIGINAL: The Baker Police Department is looking for Kenard Gaines, 17, of Baker, who is suspected murdering Kortlon Johnson, 19, of Baton Rouge, on Sunday, Jan. 19.
On Sunday, around 6:30 p.m., officers responded to shots fired on Daniels Street in Baker.
The victim, Kortlon Johnson, was found in a driveway with approximately three gunshot wounds to his neck and chest. An investigator from the EBR Coroner’s Office pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.
Detectives located shell casings in the road near the residence.
Three witnesses all gave similar statements that pointed to Gaines as the person who shot Johnson. The witnesses also picked Gaines out of a photo line-up.
According to eyewitnesses, Gaines was at the residence prior to the shooting. Johnson later entered the residence, greeted everyone present, and then asked Gaines to step outside.
The two men walked to the road and began arguing, at which point Gaines shot the victim. Gaines ran from the scene on foot.
Witnesses said they did not see Johnson with a weapon. After being shot, Johnson stumbled back toward the residence and fell to the ground where he died.
Following the investigation, Gaines is wanted for Second Degree Murder and Illegal Use of a Weapon.
