The Louisiana State Police are currently investigating an officer involved shooting that happened today in Lafayette.

The Lafayette Police Department reports that the incident started at roughly 3:15 p.m. when officers were called to the Home Bank on Ambassador Caffery Parkway to investigate a bank robbery.

We’re told the suspect went into the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money. He said that he was armed. The teller complied and the suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money.

Officers responding to the scene noticed a Ford F250 that matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle given by witnesses. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however, the suspect refused to stop.

A Police pursuit continued to Queens Row. The suspect then drove off the road into a field. He then struck a fence and officers were able to catch up to him.

The Louisiana State Police reports that an officer fired shots at the suspect, who is identified as Thomas Helvik, 41, of Port Allen. Helvik was struck and died at the scene.

Officials provided very little information regarding the details related to why officers fired at the suspect. They did say, however, that the case remains under investigation.
