The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office has arrested a local woman after she allegedly forged 69 checks belonging to her sister.

Authorities say that Lisa Diane Smith, 46, of Baton Rouge, was living with her sister and allegedly stole two books of blank checks from her.

Smith forged her sister’s signature and cashed the checks at local businesses or banks. According to an affidavit, Smith forged and passed 69 checks totaling $21,086.

Smith was interviewed at EBRSO Headquarters on October 21. She told officials there that she forged the checks in order to pay off people she owed money to.

Smith was charged with 69 counts of Forgery, Bank Fraud and Theft. Her bond is currently set at $50,000.
