PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA — The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a 34-year-old Belle Chasse man on Video Voyeurism charges. The PPSO is withholding the suspect’s identity in order to protect the victim.
On September 25, authorities received a complaint from a Belle Chasse mother that she had noticed several nude videos of her 15-year-old daughter on a family computer.
The recordings appeared to have been made with a hidden camera while the teenager was in her bedroom and were recorded without her consent.
Upon examining the videos, the mother discovered that her fiancé was captured in some of the images while positioning the camera. When the mother confronted the fiancé, he allegedly admitted that he had recorded the videos, saying he “was sick back then,” and left the residence after packing his belongings.
During the investigation, detectives narrowed the time frame of the recordings and believe they were made between December 2012 and June 2013, when the victim was 15-years-old.
Detectives further believe the videos were allegedly made by the suspect with his cellular telephone and then downloaded them to the family’s computer.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant on the suspect for the crime of video voyeurism, and on September 26, at approximately 2:00 a.m., he was located sleeping inside his vehicle in the parking lot of a Belle Chasse business. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Belle Chasse Criminal Investigations Bureau for further investigation.
Investigators also obtained a search warrant and seized the suspect’s cellular telephone, family computer, and two memory cards as evidence. A subsequent forensic examination of the computer by PPSO Detectives revealed that it contained seven nude videos of the teenager.
During questioning by detectives, the suspect provided a full confession. In his statement, the suspect said he made the recordings because he was curious and sick.
The suspect was transported to the Belle Chasse Lockup where he was booked with video voyeurism. He remains in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
Because the victim was under the age of seventeen when the crime occurred, if convicted, the suspect can be imprisoned for not less than two years or more than ten years without the benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence, and fined not more than $10,000.
Additionally, since this crime is considered a sex offense, Louisiana law requires that those convicted of the violation register as a sex offender.
