The Baton Rouge Police Department released unofficial numbers for the city's murder rate. The numbers paint a pretty disappointing picture with a 4.7 percent rise in the murder rate for 2012 when compared to 2011.

According to police stats there were 67 murders in Baton Rouge during the year. During the first eight months of 2012 there were an average of 7 murders a month.

Things did improve in the last four months, though, with an average of 2.5 murders a month.

2010 still topped the list though for the most violent year in the last three beating out 2012.

The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office also released its official homicide numbers. There were a total of 96 homicides in the entire parish for 2012, which is 5 more than the year before.
