Child injured by hit-and-run driver outside Lake Charles elementary school
LAKE CHARLES, LA (FOX44) — A 4-year-old child is in the hospital this morning after being hit by a car outside of an elementary school.
The Lake Charles Police Department reports that the incident happened at roughly 7:40 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3 outside Henry Heights Elementary. We’re told the child ran into the roadway and was struck by the side of a passing vehicle.
Officials say the crossing guard was located on the other side of the road when the child entered the roadway. The guard was unable to stop traffic in enough time.
The vehicle that struck the child drove off after the incident. Investigators are not sure whether the individual was aware that a child had been hit. They would like to locate the driver for more information.
The vehicle is described as a dark-colored, full-size SUV.
The child was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
