Deputy arrested, accused of ‘systematic theft’ from evidence section

A deputy from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office was arrested and fired after being accused of stealing property belonging to the agency.

An investigation into Deputy George Hernandez, Sr.’s activities began on Friday, Feb. 22 after a tip was given regarding the theft of items from the Property and Evidence Section. A search warrant for Hernandez’s home address was issued and officials say several items were recovered.

Officials say Hernandez was not completely truthful with investigators and admitted to “sufficient pilfering of items from the JPSO.”

Hernandez was arrested and charged with felony Systematic Theft.

Hernandez, 54, has been a member of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office since March 1997.
