Drunk man allegedly broke into church to ring the bells, play piano

A man who had a little too much to drink was arrested after he allegedly broke into a church and activated the bells.

The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident happened at roughly 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27. We’re told a priest living next door to the church called 911 because the bells were “going crazy.”

Deputies responded to the St. Philomena Catholic Church on Convention Street and found a man inside the building. Reports indicate that the man was not wearing any shoes and he was drinking.

The suspect, Hamid Banisaaid, 32, told deputies he had activated the bells and that he was just about to play the piano. Deputies inspected the building and discovered he had forced his way.

Banisaaid was arrested and charged with Simple Burglary of a Religious Building. He was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center.
