The son of EBR Parish Judge Kay Bates pleaded not guilty this morning after he allegedly stole almost 16 pounds of cocaine while working as an evidence room employee.

William Bates Colvin, 30, was charged with Obstruction of Justice and Malfeasance in Office in July.

The drugs were stolen out of an evidence locker back in December of 2012.

According to an affidavit, Colvin stole the cocaine and brought it home to his then-girlfriend, Debra Bell, 55. When Bell learned it was stolen, she broke up with Colvin and moved out.

Bell was charged on Malfeasance charges - she was also a Clerk of Court employee.

Authorites say say both suspects admitted to giving the cocaine to other people so they could sell it in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas.
