OPELOUSAS, LA (FOX44) — A fund has been set up for the nine children left behind after both of their parents died in a murder suicide in Opelousas on July 4.
Kerry J. Varis, 36, and his wife Nancy Varis, 32, were found dead at a family gathering in the 200 block of West Prudhomme Street, around 9:50 p.m. on Friday, July 4.
According to eyewitnesses, Kerry Varis approached his wife at the gathering and shot her once in the head. He then walked away from the home and turned the gun on himself.
Kerry Varis died at the scene. His wife was taken to a local hospital where she died a short time later.
Relatives say Nancy Varis wanted to end the marriage, but her husband did not. Police had also responded to the same residence earlier that morning regarding a disturbance between the husband and wife.
Family members say Nancy Varis never believed her husband would follow through on the threats he sometimes made.
The couple left behind nine children ages 5-18.
