Hunters discovery human bones in St. Amant
ST. AMANT, LA (FOX44) — Ascension Parish Sheriff's Deputies have teamed up with the LSU FACES lab to search for more remains in the area were hunters discovered a human skull over the weekend. Today the investigators found additional bone fragments. People living in the area say they don't know how something like this could happen in their quiet community.
"It's always been quiet never been bad out here at all that's a shock," Steven Fontenot, a resident who lives near the site, said. "They told me they found a human skull back there. They said they were looking for human remains."
Ascension Parish Sheriff's Deputies report that two hunters found a human skull sitting in the woods around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28. Monday, teams of investigators walked through the woods off LA 429 and LA 22 trying to find any clues as to who the skull belongs to and how they got there.
"It's just a matter of taking it back to the lab and looking over it very, very carefully to see what we can do to help this parish,” Dr. Mary Manheim, LSU FACES lab, explained.
Dr. Manheim explained that the next step for investigators is to look over the remains to determine a gender, age, and time of death for the skull and bone fragments. She says the situation in St. Amant is not uncommon in Louisiana.
"It's that time of year that hunters are out in the woods, especially, and they are finding these remains as they go about their hunting,” she said. “It’s not unusual this time of year for us to have several cases like this across the state."
Manheim says the remains will go to the LSU FACES lab. From there it will be a while before her team can deliver a profile to investigators.
Ascension Parish Deputies are currently searching through missing person cases to see if there are any clues.
